The assistant is the chat window. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini in their default form are assistants: you ask, they answer, and you carry the result to wherever the work lives. Each session starts from whatever you paste into it, and nothing persists unless you paste it again.
Whats the difference between an AI assistant and an AI agent for creative teams?
An assistant reacts to prompts one at a time and holds no durable picture of the client, the brand or the project. An agent works toward an outcome: it breaks a goal into steps, reads the brief and the brand guidelines it has access to, uses tools, and hands back finished work rather than a reply.
The difference compounds on a creative team. With an assistant, the strategist re-uploads the brand deck and re-explains the client every session, and two people prompting separately get two unrelated answers. An agent working inside shared context already has the brief, the guidelines and the last round of feedback, so its output starts from the teams position instead of the internets average.
When an assistant is enough
For a one-off question, a rewrite or a quick exploration, an assistant is the right tool and the faster one. The line is repetition: once the same context has to be explained twice, or the same multi-step job runs for a second client, the work belongs to an agent.
